Introduction to AI Healthcare and Medicine Seminar (1)

(1) Course outline 

As we enter the 21st century, advances in artificial intelligence are attracting attention and practical applications in various fields are beginning to emerge. While expectations are rising, there are cases where only expectations are ahead of the scope of realistic applications and the extent to which they can be utilized. This course will provide a learning opportunity for the application of AI / Data Science to the medical and healthcare fields. This course will organize these issues and provide not only students involved in medicine and healthcare, but also students who are broadly interested in this field with a proper knowledge of AI, a correct understanding of its application in various medical fields, and the basics of its future use, so that they can think about new applications of AI. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a sound knowledge of AI and to help them acquire a correct understanding of its application in various medical fields and the basics of its future use.

In the fall semester, classes will be held in a basic face-to-face setting. Students will have an opportunity to talk with each other and deepen their understanding. We look forward to your participation. In addition, if you would like to review the lectures, a recording of the spring semester workshop will be made available. Since there is no Q/A here, we ask that you attend the in-person workshop.

(2) Contents of each session

Session 1: Definition of AI, historical background and overview of information processing that supports AI 10/2

The history of AI’s progress and the latest status of AI will be introduced. ChatGPT is the latest topic to be canceled. The application and research of these technologies to the healthcare and medical fields is progressing, and in order to consider their application, we will first learn the basics of AI.

Session 2: You will learn about the application of AI to medical images, which is considered to be the fastest to be put to practical use. 10/9

With the progress of deep learning, its application to the medical field is accelerating as one of image processing technologies. AI has been reported to outperform physicians and technicians in reading and diagnosing images such as X-rays, CTs, and MRIs, and has begun to be put to practical use. We will look at the characteristics of AI and its future development.

Session 3: This session will provide an overview of natural language processing technology and its applicability to healthcare.  10/16,

Knowledge about healthcare and medical care is accumulated in the form of large volumes of data, including academic literature, articles, and medical records (e.g., electronic medical records). The volume of this data is beginning to exceed human capabilities, and by utilizing natural language processing technology here, various types of assistance will become possible.

Session 4: This session will provide an overview of the considerations in applying AI to medicine, including legal and ethical aspects. 10/23

The application of AI to healthcare and medicine requires consideration of various legal and ethical aspects due to its special characteristics. On the other hand, the evolution and progress of AI technology is much faster than the progress of those considerations and can be seen as a fetter. In this section, we will look at what challenges have arisen and how we should consider future developments.

Session 5: We will consider the prospects for further application of AI in various medical fields in the future. 10/30

The application and application of AI technology will lead to DX in healthcare and medicine in the future. Various possibilities are in the pipeline, including telemedicine, new diagnostic support, new services in collaboration with other industries, support for staff in nursing care and healthcare, and guiding support for preventive medicine and behavior change. These prospects will be overviewed.
